Credit Unions are in business to serve their members. A large portion of earnings are used to financially support non-profit organizations in the Credit Union’s communities. Additional profits are returned to members in the form of patronage rebates on service charges and loan interest paid, and premiums on deposit interest earned. Over the past five years, members of Williams Lake and District Credit Union received in excess of $4.4 million in distributions.
In 1952 the Credit Union opened its doors in Williams Lake. A few people with little money, strong community spirit and a lot of vision pooled their resources and joined together to keep local money in the community. Over time, Williams Lake and District Credit Union expanded into two additional communities, first in 1977 when the Credit Union opened a branch in 100 Mile House, and again in 1998 when the Bella Coola Valley Credit Union (est. 1941) was acquired by Williams Lake and District Credit Union.
From twelve original members, Williams Lake and District Credit Union has grown to three branches serving eleven thousand members in its member communities and outlying areas. In fact, the Credit Union is the only financial institution located west of Williams Lake along Highway 20, providing important access to financial services for area residents.
Sixty years later, the spirit and values that led to the creation of a local financial institution continue to exist as the Credit Union works to improve its communities for both members and non-members alike.
The credit union is overseen by a Board of Directors elected by and from the membership. The Board of Williams Lake and District Credit Union is comprised of nine Directors elected for three year terms. Directors are members who reside in the various communities served by the credit union. The Board makes the leadership decisions required to maintain a successful operation, including the approval of long-term strategic plans. Directors undertake extensive personal development through the Credit Union Director Achievement program.
